Family: Frank A. Marble (b. 1857)

Biography

Birth19 March 1861Rosilla Vanderhoof was born on 19 March 1861 in Somerset, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The record on FamilySearch lists the father as Orin Jerome Vanderhoef and the mother as Eliza Chace Vanderhoef.1
Marriage12 October 1880Frank A. Marble and she were married on 12 October 1880 in Somerset, Bristol County, Massachusetts, Frank A. Marble's parents are Benjamin and Phebe Marble. Spouse is listed as Anna S. Vanderhoof and her parents William Vanderhoof and Eliza Vanderhoof. Actually William was her brother.2
Note1896In 1896, Could Anne L and Rosilla be the same person? Both born 1861. Haven't found birth register for Annie C. Very confusing -- there are two death listings on familysearch.org with this death date, Marie L. Marble, age 35, and Annie L. Marble, age 35. Both married to Frank A. Marble. I will go with the one that has an image (attached), and I will assume she is Rosilla.
I see Annie L.'s death certificate, and I see Annie L. alive in the 1910 census, a second marriage, so I have something all confused. I will get back to it.
Death21 August 1896She died on 21 August 1896 in Somerset, Bristol County, Massachusetts, Listed in death register as Annie L. Marble, maiden name Vanderhoff, age 35 yrs, 5 months, 2 days. Sentry James Morgan

M, #6181, b. before 1755, d. 29 January 1782

Biography

Birthbefore 1755Sentry James Morgan was born before 1755 in Herefordshire, England. Other reports said that he was a native of Ireland, and some say he was born in America.
Immigration1772He immigrated in 1772 to Charlestown A record was found of a James Morgan who immigrated to Philadelphia in 1772, as an indentured servant for about five years to William Hurvey in Southwark (PA?), which may or may not be the same person.
Residence1773As of 1773 James lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, for about 18 months after he came to America.
Military1774He served in the military in 1774 in various assignments: first on board a Continental sloop of war as a steward for 10 months, and then as a sergeant of the First Regiment of Artillery under Captain Harrison for a time.
OccupationLATE 1770'SLATE 1770'S James worked in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, as keeper of a public house with legal permission.
Militaryabout 1779He served in the military about 1779 in Pennsylvania in the Pennsylvania line.
Movedabout 1780As of about 1780, James moved to Elizabeth Town, Union County, New Jersey, with his wife and family. Some reports state that he was Roman Catholic.
History Note24 November 1781On 24 November 1781 in Elizabeth Town, Union County, New Jersey, the following event took place: Sentry James Morgan shot the Rev. James Caldwell.
Death29 January 1782He died on 29 January 1782 at Gallows Hill in Westfield, Union County, New Jersey, by hanging.
Newspaper22 February 1990According to the on 22 February 1990 edition of the in Westfield, Union County, New Jersey, and the five following editions. I have doubts that the sentry James Morgan, who was hung at Gallows Hill in Westfield, could possibly be an ancestor of our Catherine Ann Morgan. He died in 1782, leaving evidently a wife and family. It is possible he could have left a son who grew up to be Catherine Ann's father. However, Phineas Carman Pearsall did not come to Westfield until 1879. I suspect rather that later generations of Pearsall's in Westfield conflated the Westfield tale of the infamous soldier named Morgan with the mystery of Catherine Ann Morgan's parentage, and jumped to the assumption of a connection. But of course it is possible, and for completeness I am appending the full story of sentry James Morgan here.1
