Obituary3 October 19023 October 1902, Attica, Harper Couny, Kansas, Attica Independent Obituary:. An Old Settler Gone

One of the pioneer settlers of Harper county died at his home in Attica, Wednesday, Sept. 24.

B.B. Essley (sic) was born in Indiana, 68 years ago. At the age of four years, his parents moved to Illinois where Mr. Essley grew to manhood and where he married Miss Eliza Reed at New Boston. They moved from Illinois to Newton, Kansas, and lived there 12 years. Sixteen years ago they came to Harper county and located a short distance north-west of Attica. Nine years ago, while living on the farm, Mr. Essley, who was a very heavy man, fell from his wagon while driving home from town and received an injury which confined him to his bed for seven years, and was one of the causes which led up to his death. For the past 2 years he has been able to be about some, until about two weeks ago, when he was again confined to his bed by a complication of diseases, of which stomach trouble was one, and which finally carried him away.

Seven children were the result of the union of Mr. and Mrs. Essley, three of whom are dead, of the other four, Mrs. Sid Larmer, lives in Oklahoma and Frank and Benton Essley live in Huston, Kansas, and the youngest boy, Fred, lived at home with his parents.

Mr. Essley was highly esteemed by all who knew him and although not able to be about to meet his old time friends, yet there were always many inquiries concerning his health and welfare. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of the entire community.

CARD OF THANKS

Mrs. B. P. Essley and children wish to express their sincere thanks through the columns of the Independent, to their many friends who were so kind and helpful during the late bereavement, in the death of their husband and father, B. P. Essley.
