John Smalley (b. 1843) moved with his parents to Somersett Township, Mercer County, Missouri during the mid-1850s. After the U.S. Civil War began, John served for six months in the 44th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia. Afterward, along with brothers William H., Isaac M., Jr., and (later) Jesse R., he joined Company D, 2nd Missouri Cavalry (Merrill’s Horse). All were enlisted men.
John’s farm in Mercer County was near Princeton. During the land rushes in Oklahoma Territory that took place around the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, several Mercer County farmers decided to seek out opportunities there. John was one of them. When Kiowa and Comanche lands were opened for settlement in 1901, he participated in the land lottery there and made a claim northwest of Snyder, OT. John split time between the two farms during the following twenty-four years and was living in Oklahoma when the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Census took place.
Due to failing health, which included near blindness, John sold his Oklahoma farm during 1925 and died peacefully at his Mercer residence a few years later.1 |
