Biography

BirthOctober 1844Thomas Edwards was born in October 1844 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut.1,2
Newspaper Mention9 February 1899The 9 February 1899 edition of the Port Chester Journal, Port Chester, Westchester County, New York, reported in a rambling editorial, on a walk that the editor, F. B. W. , took on Rye Beach, Candlemass Day, 1899. He runs into Mr. Holly, likely Newman since they got into a discussion of some building improvements for Beck's Hotel. The editor had walked up on the bluff looking for Tom Edwards, but Hill Hotel was shut up.
Directory1900As of 1900 Thomas was listed in the Rye, Westchester County, New York, directory at Beach Hill Hotel, Rye Beach. proprietor of the Beach Hill Hotel, home ditto.
Census1 June 1900He appeared in the census 1 June 1900 at Rye Township in Rye, Westchester County, New York. Thomas is listed as: Head, born Oct 1844, age 55, single, born in CT, father born England, mother CT. Hotel proprietor, renting. In same household: George W. Langley, age 46, Butler; Gustave Galbrun, age 33, waiter, emigrated from France 1890; George Wilson, age 69, bartender. Two doors away is William Webb Holly, Tom's cousin.3
Census29 April 1910He appeared in the census 29 April 1910 at 116 Rye Beach Avenue, near Beck Avenue, in Rye, Westchester County, New York. Thomas is listed as: age 65, single, Hotelkeeper in Hotel,
only member in household, renting. The house numbers are difficult to read, but may be a separate household in #116, which may be the hotel. Several other families on both sides are also hotel keepers. In the column "Employer, Employee, or working on own account" the enumerator seems to be using two codes, Emp and W, and I don't know what his codes mean. He codes hotel workers like waiters and chambermaids as W, which would seem incorrect to me, so I don't know what he means by Emp. Thomas is coded Emp.4
Deathafter 1910He died after 1910 in Rye, Westchester County, New York, Since he was living at the 1910 census, his death was after 1910.4
