Martha

F, #2419, b. about 1760, d. between 1830 and 1836

Family: Abraham Holly (b. 17 April 1746, d. 7 January 1828)

SonIsaac Holly (b. 25 December 1780, d. before 18 January 1819)

Biography

Birthabout 1760Martha was born about 1760 in Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Marriageabout 1780Abraham Holly and she were married about 1780 in Fairfield County, Connecticut,1
Child Born25 December 1780On 25 December 1780 at the home of Gideon Weed, in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Abraham and Martha had while Abraham was home on furlough from the military.
Baptism5 May 1815She was baptized on 5 May 1815 at First Congregational Church in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut. "Martha wife of Abr'm Holley, Adult aged -"2
Church Affiliation5 May 1815As of 5 May 1815, Martha was affiliated with First Congregational Church, in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut. "Admissions in the church: Martha, wife of Abra'm Holley"2
Church Affiliationbefore 1820As of before 1820, Martha was affiliated with First Congregational Church, in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut. In an undated (pre-1828) list of female members, "Martha, wife Abraham Holly."2
Census1830Martha appeared on the census of in 1830 in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Widow Martha Holly, with 1 female 40-50, and 1 female 70-80. Abraham had died in 1828. Neighbors Widow Lydia Weed, Widow Charlotte Bishop, Henry Waterbury, Thaddeus Bell, Moses Mathers, Widow Elizabeth Brown.3
Deathbetween 1830 and 1836She died between 1830 and 1836 in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Perhaps she died in this time period, because she did not apply for Abraham's pension in 1836 when pensions were extended to widows who were married before or during the soldier's service.
Census-not confirmed14 November 1850Martha has not been confirmed to be the following entry for the census of 14 November 1850 Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut: Listed as age 75 female in the household of Isaac Wardwell, age 29, farmer, with Isaac's wife Mary, children Adelade and Jacob, and J. H. Scofield, Shoemaker. I don't think this is the same Martha, because Abraham's wife had Isaac in 1780, when this woman would have been 5 years old. This Martha is still alive in 1860, same household, age 85. There is a death in the Darien Town Records 29 Sep 1860, for Martha Holly, age 85, born in New Canaan, Residence Darien, widowed, cause of death Old Age. The same death is recorded in the Darien First Congregational Church records.4

Parents

FatherAbraham Holly (b. 17 April 1746, d. 7 January 1828)
MotherMartha (b. about 1760, d. between 1830 and 1836)

Biography

Birth25 December 1780Isaac Holly was born on 25 December 1780 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. "at the dwelling house of Gideon Weed of said Stamford."1
Census1800He appeared in the census 1800 at Darien area in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Isaac is listed as: Isaac Hawley, with a notation after it that looks like the numeral 2. One male 16-25, 2 females under 10, one female 16-25. Neighbors are Eben'r Waterbury, Joseph Smith, Cary Bell. This seems to be the same Isaac who is in New Canaan in 1810, because in 1810 he is next to Deodate Waterbury and Jos. Smith Jr. Almost all the Hollys in the 1800 Stamford census are spelled Hawley. There were 3 Isaacs enumerated in Stamford that year. There is an Isaac Hawley, Jr., next to Nathan Hawley (his father), on image 10 (this is the Isaac who married the two Bishop sisters), and an Isaac on image 7 who married Deborah Waters.2
Deathbefore 18 January 1819He died before 18 January 1819 in Connecticut His mother, in her affidavit for her husband's pension application on this date, refers to her son Isaac "now dec'd".1

Biography"The seventh in descent [from the original immigrant to Stamford, Richard Ambler] was Joseph, who was born May 23, 1804, at the old Ambler homestead, now known as the Whelpley Place. The family had for several generations owned a large tract of land in that section, lying partly in Poundridge. On May 23, 1827, he married Maria Rodgers, of Patterson, Putnam County, a niece of Benjamin Isaacs, of Bedford, and a member of his family. For several years after his marriage he occupied a part of his father's property in the town of Poundridge, and Benjamin I. Ambler was born there on July 27, 1830. His only brother, Joseph Augustus, was born in 1833 and died in infancy. In 1835, after the death of Judge Isaacs, for who he was named, his father bought the Isaacs farm in Bedford village, and resided there till his death, on August 15, 1876. The house, which stands fronting "The Green," is supposed to have been the first one erected in the village after the place was burned in 1779. It was long occupied by Benjamin Isaacs, who was town clerk from 1804 to 1831, and many years county judge, and has been the home of the present owner [Benjamin Isaacs Ambler] for fifty-one years. Biography1886In 1886: He "received his education under the care of Samuel L. Holmes, who kept a select school in Bedford; at the Bedford Academy under Mr. Close, Mr. Williamson and others, and at Union Academy. In 1853 he entered the mercantile business in Bedford, in partnership with the late Hezekiah D. Robertson, under the firm-name of Ambler & Robertson. In 1858 the partnership was dissolved and he continued the business until 1863, since which time his occupation has been that of a farmer.

In his earlier life Mr. Ambler took an active interest in politics, and in 1854 was elected supervisor, being the second Democrat in many years to achieve that distinction. He was again chosen to that office in 1862. From 1853 to 1863 he was postmaster of Bedford, and was deputy sheriff from 1852 to 1855. In the fall of 1858 he was the candidate of the Democratic party for sheriff, but though he ran largely ahead of his ticket, he was defeated by a small majority. He was the president of the board of trustees of the Bedford Female Institute for some fifteen years, during the period when it was most successful. Mr. Ambler is a gentleman of dignified and courteous address, careful and accurate in business matters, of genial temperament and kind disposition. He was married, on September 23, 1863, to Miss Anna M. Lounsbery, daughter of James Lounsbery, of Bedford. He has no children."1
