Biography

BiographyEntry in article on Hans Georg Hertzel, in the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. See attached. In this article from 1966, Hannah Roach may have combined two Philips into one person with two wives, combining all the children of the two Philips into one family. Mike O'Neill, in his article quoted above, separates them into two families. One -- this Philip (d.1827) who married Maria Catharina -- was the son of Philip (b. 1710) and Margaretha (Herzel) Schlauch and the other, born in 1743 in Northampton County, was the son of Johann Jacob Schlough, the brother of Philip (b.1710), and married Rosina. Philip and Rosina had several children in Northampton County and then may have relocated to Rowan County, North Carolina.1
Birthbetween 1748 and 1755Philip Schlough, Jr., was born between 1748 and 1755 in Pennsylvania. Based on orphan court records, in 1759 he was less than 14, and in 1769 he was over 14 and under 21.

His Wikitree record (Schlauch-24) gives a birth date of 12 Apr 1743 (Old Williams Township congregation records, which was near the family property in Lower Saucon.) Researcher Mike O'Neil believes this Philip to be the son of Jacob Slough and Catharina Frantz. Jacob was the brother of Johann Philip Schlaugh. This would be the Philip who married Rosina, and most likely moved to Rowan County, NC, with their children.
Confirmation22 May 1768He was confirmed on 22 May 1768 at Old Williams Church in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania,2
Marriagebetween 1774 and 1776He and Maria Catharina were married between 1774 and 1776 Probably at Dryland Lutheran, because his children before and after this were baptized there.

Hannah Benner Roach, in her article on the Hertzel family, gives her name only as Maria Catharina, no surname. Her Findagrave record lists her name as Catharina Rose. Perhaps she remarried a Rose?

Philip and Catharina had at least 3 children between 1777 and 1787, all baptized at Dryland Lutheran:
John George
John
Anna Margaret
Death1827He died in 1827 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania,3
Research Note20182018. Researcher Michael O'Neill has delved into the German and Pennsylvania records to sort out the Schloughs, and he has an article specifically on Sorting out the Sloughs: Philip Slough .
