Obituary20 November 190320 November 1903, Obituary:. Death of a Pioneer

Last week came the news of the death of John Emory Roberts at Belle Plaine, Iowa, and on Saturday Nov. 14th, his body was brought here for burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

The deceased was born in the town of Fenner, Madison Co., N.Y., Nov. 21, 1835. In 1839, he with his parents, brothers and sisters came to Wisconsin and settled on the farm now owned by G.W. Burchard, on mile north of Ft. Atkinson. As a boy he became familiar with the scenes and hardships of pioneer life. In 1855, he married Miss Huldah Alling, who died in April, 1882, leaving the husband and daughter to mourn her loss. Two months later, the daughter, wife of A.D. Merriman of this city, followed the mother to the spirit land.

In 1883, Mr. Roberts married Miss Henrietta M. Potter of Belle Plaine, Iowa, and later they moved to that place, where they have since resided.

He followed the trade of carpenter and builder until failing health compelled him to relinquish the active duties of life. The latter part of his life was one of great suffering from that dread affliction, a cancer. Through all his suffering he was sustained by the belief that by and by his trust should be rewarded by a life where pain shall not be found. In his pain he could say, "Thy rod and they staff they comfort me."

Mr. Roberts was well known in this city and greatly respected for his many good qualities. In 1871 he became a member of the Ft. Atkinson Lodge No. 24 Odd Fellows and remained a working member of the Order until his death. A representative of the Iowa Lodge accompanied the body to this place and assisted in the burial rites. He died Nov. 11, 1903. Funeral services were held at the Iowa home, and after the arrival of the body in Ft. Atkinson, a short service, conducted by Rev. J. Reynolds, paster of the M.E. Church here, was held at the residence of his brother L. M. Roberts. He leaves a wife, one sister, Mrs. Crane of Steelton, Pa., and a brother, L. M. Roberts of this city, to mourn his loss. Of a large family that came to Ft. Atkinson in 1839, only the brother and sister here mentioned, remain this side the spirit land.
