Newspaper Mention6 April 1894The 6 April 1894 edition of the The Marshall Statesman, Marshall, Calhoun County, Michigan, reported White Cap Folly

Threats Against Mrs. Francis VanVoorhees of Fredonia

Mrs. Francis Van Voorhees, a very estimable lady, resides on the shores of Lyon lake, in Fredonia township. Jerry Francis is a reputable farmer of the same locality and distantly related to Mrs. VanVoorhees. Something over a year ago, Francis built a fine new house, and almost before the finishing touches were put upon it, the building was burned to the ground in the dead of night. Tracks in the snow indicated that the house had been set on fire and other circumstances led Mr. Francis to the firm conviction of incendiarism. Shortly after the fire, The Statesman endeavored to get a statement from him, but he was very reticent.

It now transpire that Mrs. VanVoorhees is the person suspected of the crime and several "white cap" letters received by that lady during March have caused her great annoyance. The letters are written in disguised hands and each one is evidently from a different person, though one and the same person may have inspired the epistles.

J. B. Arnold, an old resident of Fredonia township, died at eleven o'clock Saturday night. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Lyon lake church.

Marshall (MI) Daily Chronicle
Wednesday, January 26, 1898
Jared Bates Arnold was born in Kent Co., Rhode Island, Dec. 4, 1829, and died in Fredonia, Mich., January 22, 1898. He came to Michigan and settled in Eckford township in 1835, and moved to Fredonia in 1867. He was married to Maria Van Voorhees Jan. 15, 1857. To them were born five children. One passed away in childhood, Henry resides in Kaysville, Utah, Frank and Ed, at home, and Mrs. Theodore Corlis, who with their devoted mother mourn the loss of a worthy and affectionate husband and father.

When about fourteen years of age Mr. Arnold united with the Methodist church and died as he lived trusting in the Lord. In his younger days he was an active worker in the Master's vineyard. He superintended the Sunday school, was trustee and will be remembered as a kind-hearted, good man.

His widow who is in feeble health confidently looks forward to a blessed meeting in the land where there is no sickness and where all tears are wiped away.1
