Obituary15 March 195615 March 1956, New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Obituary:. Henry Raymond Tilley, 36, of Durham, died at his late home there in Haddam Quarter Road, Tuesday, after an extended illness. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton P. Tilley of Gerrish Lane.

Born in Rye, N.Y., April 8, 1919, he attended schools here and graduated from New Canaan High School. He attended New York University and took special courses at Columbia.

During World War 2, Mr. Tilley served overseas as a captain in the U.S. Army, with the 28th Infantry Division. He was awarded the European Theatre ribbon with three combat stars as well as the Purple Heart.

At the time of his death he was with the International Silver Company in Meriden as sales manager of the 1847 Rogers Division.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lola Powell Tilley; three sons, Jay Powell Tilley, Jeffrey Cranston Tilley and Peter Raymond Tilley; one daughter, Linda Nason Tilley; two brothers, John M. Tilley of Noroton Heights and David B. Tilley of Easton, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Mason Pearsall of Quakertown, N.J., and Mrs. Carl Winsted of Granby.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Durham Congregational Church, with the Rev. Leonard B. Kohlofer officiating. Interment was in Durham Cemetery.

Newspaper Mention3 July 1951The 3 July 1951 edition of the Stamford Advocate, Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut, reported New Canaan Soldier Recuperating from Plane Crash Shock

Pfc. John M. Tilley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton P. Tilley of Gerrish La., New Canaan, is recuperating at the base hospital, Fort Dix, N.J. from injuries received in the crash of a C-47 transport plane on Friday.
Pfc. Tilley was not seriously injured but received bruises and suffered some shock as he was thrown clear when the plane crashed, his sister, Mrs. Carl J. Winstead reported after a visit to her brother yesterday.

He was on his way home on furlough from Kirkland Air Force Base, Texas, when the plane crashed at Fort Dix. Pfc. Tilley has been stationed at Kirkland since Christmas time after taking his basic training at San Antonio, Texas. He joined the Air Force nine months ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward T. T. Williams of 375 Park Ave., New York, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Virginia Winfield Williams, to Pfc. John Milton Tilley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton P. Tilley of Gerrish Lane, New Canaan. The engagement was announced at a lawn party Saturday, at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David Nash, Pratt Island, where the Williamses are spending the summer.

Miss Williams' father is president of the Lambert Company in Jersey City, N.J. She is a graduate of Mary Institute in St. Louis, Mo., and Briarcliff Junior College, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where she majored in radio and drama.

Pfc. Tilley, whose father is a consulting engineer, is a graduate of New Canaan High School and the Feagin School of Drama and Radio in New York. He is serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Kirtland Air Base in Albuquerque, N.M. The survivor of a plane crash, Pfc. Tilley is home on recuperative leave.
