In Sep of 1901, the Surrogate Court printed a notice in the local paper for a number of issues, for people to present any claims against "John B. Schmaling, late of the Town of Rye" to the office of Daniel Haight, King St., Port Chester. The undersigned Administrators were Frederick C. Schmaling and John T. Schmaling.

The article describe how Mrs. Schmaling arranged with the guests to surprise her husband. The evening consisted of piano and vocal selections, and a gramophone brought by Mr. Jared Wilson, of North Main Street. Supper was served, and the guests departed, wishing the "young couple" many long years of happiness.
