A complete writeup of the occasion was sent in but too late for last week and we have not the space to give it in full this week. Suffice it to say that the crowd had a jolly time and got outside of one of the biggest feeds of the season, such as only Harper county housewives know how to prepare. The occasion was the birthday anniversary of both Mr. and Mrs. Smalley and they certainly were given cause to keep it in remembrance as one of the most enjoyable days of their lives. Birth25 December 1838Daniel B. Pratt was born on 25 December 1838 in Pennsylvania.1
Marriageabout 1862He and Margaret Smith were married about 1862 in Greene County, Pennsylvania,1,2
Biography1888In 1888: D. B. Pratt, farmer and stock-grower, Waynesburg, Penn. was born in Franklin Township, Greene County, Penn., December 25, 1838. He is a son of William Pratt, also a prominent farmer in this township, who was born in Fayette County, Penn., October 13, 1814. His parents were James and Sallie (Boner) Pratt, also natives of Fayette County, and of English lineage. William Pratt owned a well improved farm of 200 acres in Franklin Township, where he died in 1874. He was a blacksmith by trade, in which he engaged until 1854 when he began farming. He spent most of his life in Greene County, where he was united in marriage, in 1838, with Miss Harriet, daughter of Joshua and Catharine (Livengood) Thomas. Her father was born near Philadelphia, Penn., and was of Dutch ancestry. Mrs. Pratt was born in Center Township, this county, June 2, 1820, and was the seventh in a family of fifteen children.

D. B. Pratt, the subject of this sketch, is a man of tireless zeal and unusual energy, by means of which he has been very successful in his chosen pursuit, and owns a well improved farm of 175 acres. On August 25, 1870, he married Margaret, daughter of William and Sarah (Bodkin) Smith, who were of English and Irish lineage. Her mother was a native of Pennsylvania. Her father was born in New Jersey, and died in 1874. They were the parents of sixteen children, of whom Mrs. Pratt is the youngest. To Mr. and Mrs. Pratt have been born two sons -- William Harvey and Lindsley Inghram. Their mother is a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Pratt is a Democrat and a member of the I.O.O.F. He has served as school director and auditor of his township.

NOTE: There is a little confusion here. William Harvey Pratt and Lindsley Inghram Pratt were brothers of Daniel B. Pratt, not his sons. [HK, 2018]3

Marriage27 March 1851Benjamin Pratt and she were married on 27 March 1851 in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana,

Witness9 April 1851She was a witness. Married, in this place, on the 27th, Mr. Benjamin Pratt and Mrs. Mary Steele. P.3, c.2.

I see a Mary Steel in Eel Twp, Cass County in the 1850 census. No husband is listed, she is listed first, age 40 and has apparently 6 children ranging from age 23 - 7
Morris H (23),
Leander (21),
Count J.(16),
Elisha (13),
Olivia (10),
Leonard (7)

If our Benjamin married her, perhaps he wasn't as old as indicated by the 1850 census. However, the connection with Lake Maxinkuckee in Mary's son Count Steel's memoirs, supports the fact that this is the same Benjamin.

In an Ancestry tree, I see this family, with a father Elisha Steel, who died 29 May 1848, in Logansport, IN. Mary's maiden name was Hadden, daughter of Smith Hadden who died 1857 in Oswego, NY. m. 31 Dec 1823 in Mentz, Cayuga Cty, NY. This tree says she married second James Pratt, b. 1805, but has no information on him. James was one of Benjamin's grandsons, an attorney who lived in Logansport until the early 1870's. Mary Jane Hadden Steel Pratt died, according to this tree, at Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana, 18 Apr 1860. I have tried to verify that, but was not able to find anything.
Witnessabout 1852She lived with Benjamin Pratt about 1852 in Union Township, Marshall County, Indiana. In Count S. Steel's biography, it says "In 1852 his mother married James Pratt and the family moved to the latter's farm in Marshall County, Ind. In August of that year, Count S. returned to Logansport..."

The marriage records specify Benjamin, not James. Actually they married in 1851, in the spring, so it sounds as if they moved in the late spring or early summer to Marshall County.

Lake Maxinkuckee, in Union Township, Ind. is about 37 miles from Logansport.

The website http://www.maxinkuckee.history.pasttracker.com/_union_township.htm
states that "Union Township was organized in 1840. It was likely named after Union County, Indiana, the former home of some of the early settlers."

This is interesting because one of Benjamin's Carroll County deeds lists him "of Union County." And Union County, Indiana, was the way point for the Fayette County, PA, Pratts, before they moved on further west.

I am indebted to Jocelyn, ancestry user jocelyn_K_B, for her help with information related to Benjamin's life during his marriage to Mary Jane Hadden, and the information about Count Sobieski Steel http://www.ksgenweb.org/archives/1912/s3/steel_count_sobieski.html
Witnessabout 1858She was a witness. In the biography of Count S. Steel (the son of Benjamin's wife Mary (Hadden) Steel) it says "He (Count) remained in Peoria until the spring of 1857 and then returned to Marshall county, Indiana. He worked in a carriage factory there for a year and then moved his mother and sisters to Mishawaka, Ind."

http://www.ksgenweb.org/archives/1912/s3/steel_count_sobieski.html

If he moved his mother and sisters to Mishawaka, perhaps in early 1858, where was Pratt? It sounds as if they split up, because Benjamin was alive in 1860 when he lived in his son's household in Maryland.
Death28 April 1860She died on 28 April 1860 in Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana, Her burial location has not been found. The old Mishawaka Cemetery was not documented until the 1990's and there were many graves without stones or with unreadable stones. The local genealogical society supplemented the graveyard inscriptions with burial permit records, funeral home records, and other supplemental information, but all the burials are not known. Or perhaps she was buried elsewhere.

The date is from a biography of her son Count Sobieski Steel.1
