Sachs, the man who collected the money for the licenses, still longers in 'durance vile', anxiously awaiting some philanthropist to go his security for $2000. |
Newspaper Mention | 6 August 1876 | The 6 August 1876 edition of the New Orleans Republican, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, reported Cheap Licenses that are Costly The police have arrested James Pratt, an attorney, and Williams Sochs, no particular occupation, for obtaining money by fraudulent representations. The story, as told by Sochs, is that Pratt hired him to seek parties who had not paid their licenses and tell that that he was properly authorized to issue city, States and United States licenses at a great discount. Sochs succeeding in inducing several store keepers to give him money, for which he furnished a receipt that was worth as much as the paper it was written on -- no more. Mr. W. H. James, employed in the City Hall, pushed the case, assisting the detectives. When Sochs was arrested, he talked as if he really was innocent, telling exactly how Pratt had instructed him to work, and that thus far he had not pocketed a dollar of the money -- Pratt taking all of it, not even paying a percentage. The case as it stands has a decidedly bad look, but Pratt puts in a general denial. There will be an investigation in a few days before Judge Evans. |

Birth | 1845 | Seth Bacchus Pratt was born in 1845 in Rushford, Allegany County, New York. (1850 census lists Seth's birthplace as Pennsylvania, 1870 lists Ohio, 1880 Penna. So it is possible that MD Pratt assumed he was born in Rushford as the other boys were, but perhaps there was a sojourn in Pennsylvania before moving to Indiana.) His obituary in the Logansport Pharos-Tribune, 18 Sep 1890, stated that he was born in Allegheny County, PA. This reinforces the 1850 and 1880 censuses. But it could also be due to confusion, since Mary Herrick was from Allegany County, NY, and the two older boys were born there.1 |
Research Note | 1856 | 1856 Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. There is a note from Cass County Biographies, copied for me at the Indiana State Library, vol. 8, that says that in Logansport, in 1856, Seth B. and C. H. Pratt were partners in a confectionary. Well, in 1856, this Seth B. was 11 years old, so I don't think so. There was a C.H. Pratt, however, in 1840, in Hume, Allegany County, who would have been born 1800-1810, which would have been about the same age as Richard Smalley Pratt, or a bit older. Most probably coincidence. However, I take any little clue with this family, because I don't have much. |

Notice is hereby given that the third general meeting of the creditors of said bankrupt will be held at the office of Henry Jordan, Register, Room 6, No. 28 1/2 East Market Street, Indianapolis, Ind. on February 22d, 1879, at 10 o'clock a.m. for the purposes named in the 28th section of the Bankrupt Act, approved March 2, 1867. Gertrude, daughter, age 9, Idiotic, and Clara, daughter, age 6, and Osker, son, age 4. Lizzie Williis, House Servant, age 18. It is interesting that Seth's 1860 census says born in PA, as well as this one, and 1870 says Ohio. My understanding was that he was born in Rushford, NY, as were the other two boys. However, it is an interesting coincidence since his grandfather Benjamin was supposed to be from Penna.7 |

Obituary | 17 September 1890 | 17 September 1890, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, Logansport Reporter Obituary:. Marion Chronicle: Seth Pratt died at eleven o'clock this morning at his residence, corner Sixth and Gallatin streets, aged forty-six years. The cause of his death, consumption, caused by hardship and exposure in the war of the Rebellion. Seth Pratt was born and reared at Logansport. He was a son of James Pratt, who, being seized with the gold fever, in 1850, started overland for California, and was never afterward heard of. He was supposed to have been killed by the Indians. Seth Pratt was a brave and efficient solder. Early in the struggle he enlisted as a private in Co. G, 73rd regiment, and carried a musket for four years. He was twice wounded, and as a result of his injuries, one arm was little better than useless. After the war he returned to Logansport, where he resided until three years ago, when he removed to this city. He leaves a wife, two sons, and a daughter. |
Burial | 18 September 1890 | He was buried on 18 September 1890 at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Section 13, Lot 1037, Space 06, in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana.8 |
Obituary | 18 September 1890 | 18 September 1890, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, Logansport Pharos-Tribune Obituary:. Seth B. Pratt, formerly of this city, but more recently residing in Marion, Ind., died at his home on Tuesday. He was forty-five years of age at the time of his death and had many warm friends both here and elsewhere. In fact his character and disposition was such as to not only create but to retain friendship and he was well and favorably known wherever he sojourned. The proximate cause of his demise was an attack of la grippe which settled upon his lungs and caused gradual wasting and death. He was born in Allegheny county, Pa., July 8, 1845. Of his family, his mother, Mrs. Mary Dagan, of Logansport, aged 74 years; Capt. R. H. Pratt, founder of the Carlisle, Pa., Indian school, and James N. Pratt, an attorney of New Orleans, are living. He and Miss Emma Pryor, of Logansport, were married in that city Dec. 15, 1869. Three children were born to them. Clara, aged 17, Oscar, aged 16, and Dudley, aged 9, all living. This family came to Marion from Logansport, June 19, 1888, and have resided here ever since. Capt. R. H. Pratt and his wife, together with J.M. Pratt, accompanied the family and remains from Marion which arrived here yesterday about half-past 2 o'clock p.m.. and together with his relatives and friends here will attend his funeral which takes place from the residence of D. E. Pryor, Esq., his brother-in-law, No. 710 Broadway, at 10:30 a.m. today. Under the "Daily Journal" column: Capt. R. H. Pratt, of the Carlisle Indian school, is in the city, called here by the death of his brother, Seth Pratt. |

DNA Clues | DNA Connection to John Pratt and Avarilla Boner family. We have several matches on Chromosome 14 in the segment from about 30 to 55, who have John Pratt of Maryland in their trees. This is the same segment where we other match descendants of Richard Henry Pratt. I am pursuing this clue, because this John Pratt family supposedly started out in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, where Mason D. Pratt states that Benjamin signed a deed in 1864. Whether he did or not is in question, but it is an interesting coincidence of location. This family migrated west through Fayette County, Pennsylvania; Union County, Indiana; and Mercer County, Illinois. An 1837 deed to Benjamin Pratt in Indiana states he is "of Union County." However, we cannot be sure if the deed refers to our Benjamin Pratt or John and Avarilla's Benjamin Pratt. According to the 1850 census, Benjamin was born in Pennsylvania. This John Pratt had a son named Benjamin, which is only a moderately common name. Also, one of his daughters, Avarilla, married an Essley and named a son Benjamin Pratt Essley. I have sometimes wondered if John and Avarilla's Benjamin is the same Benjamin, but there are too many issues with that scenario. DNA Connection to Smalley family: Many of us family members have DNA matches to descendants of the couple Isaac Smalley and Cietje Pittenger. We also have some matches to other Pittengers and Smalley's with the presumed MRCA further back, not passing thru Isaac and Cietje's family. I myself have over 250 matches back to Smalley-Pittenger. This strong connection makes me consider that perhaps Richard Smalley Pratt's mother was a Smalley.

Note | Very little is known about Benjamin Pratt. I (Holly Kilpatrick) have recorded some events here that may not even be our Benjamin, but I would rather cast a wide net than overlook a clue. I have spent fruitless hours searching for some hint as to his family origins. Since his son Richard had the middle name "Smalley" and one of his grandsons had the middle name "Bacchus" and I have not seen those names on the Herrick side, I have searched Pennsylvania records for a town with Pratts, Bacchuses and Smalleys. I have followed up on Pratts in New York State near the area where Richard Smalley Pratt lived with Mary Herrick and where the boys were born (even though I think that relocation was likely due to the Herrick side). I have searched for Pratt's in Philadelphia. I have looked at many Benjamin Pratts from the Vermont and Maine Pratts, only to find them well-accounted for in their expected places. The only items below that I know refer to our Benjamin are the 1850 census and the Maxinkuckee property. The other events may be pieces to this puzzle, or to someone else's puzzle.
Birth | 1776 | He was born in 1776 in Pennsylvania. We have only one source for the possibility that Benjamin was born in Pennsylvania. That is the 1850 census on which he appears, as age 79, in the household of his daughter-in-law, Mary Herrick Pratt, in Logansport, IN. If this is his correct age, he would have been born in 1771. M.D. Pratt estimates a birth date of about 1795, which puts him in the next generation. A birth date about 1795 is more compatible with his son Richard being born about 1815-1820, and Richard's oldest son born in 1840. A birth of about 1795 would also be more compatible with additional marriages in 1851 and about 1857, rather than being 80 and 86 for those marriages. It would also be more compatible with a relocation to Maryland from Indiana in or before 1864, rather than being 93 at the time. M. D. Pratt mentions the deed for the Maxinkuckee property in Indiana that lists Benjamin being from Philadelphia County, PA. I am working on locating that deed. In my search for Benjamin's father, and Benjamin's birthplace, I have focused on some clues in family names. Benjamin's son was named Richard Smalley Pratt. Smalley is obviously a family name. I have not found that name associated with the Herrick family. Mary's father was James S., and she did name a son James Madison. James Madison was a popular boy's name in the 1800's. We have many DNA matches with Smalley descendants of Isaac Smalley and Cietje Pittenger of New Jersey, and also some matches to Smalley's and Pittengers to a further back MRCA.. Mary named her youngest son Seth Bacchus. In the 1860 and 1880 censuses, Seth's birthplace is listed as Pennsylvania. The Herrick family had strong ties to New York State, to Michigan, and to Ohio, but I am not aware of their connection to Pennsylvania. Bacchus is obviously a family name. I have looked into Bacchus, Smalley, and Pennsylvania in the hope of finding some connection. And one possible connection may lie in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. There we find the confluence of the names Smalley, Pratt, and Bacchus in Greene and Fayette Counties in the 1700's and early 1800's. Based on other DNA matches, I am considering the possiblity that the name Bacchus was a version of Barcus, which itself seems to be a version of Barkhurst. We have DNA matches to a Barcus/Barkhurst/Backhurst family originating from Queen Anne's County, MD. A Mary "Polly" Barcus married Henry Pittenger. who was Cietje's brother, and Nicholas Pittenger, another brother, married Lidia Barcus. As of 2018, I find some support for the Fayette County theory, because we have some matching DNA segments with a Stevick cousin, descended from Mason D. Pratt's sister, and three people who descend from the John Pratt, Sr & Avarilla Bonar family, who lived in Fayette County in the early 1800's and who may have moved there from Queen Anne's County, Md. In his 1864 deed, Benjamin is "of Queen Anne's County, Maryland." The Smalley DNA signal is much stronger than the Pratt-Bonar signal. Summary of possible birth locations: PA: Only known census (1850) says PA Smalley connection: members of the family emigrated out to western PA DNA Connections to Fayette County, PA MD: Mason D. Pratt mentions Maryland Fayette County Pratt's may have relocated from MD1,2 |

Research Note | 1833 | 1833 Hume, Allegany County, New York. From 1833 - 1837, there was someone named Seth H. Pratt, who was a supervisor in the town of Hume. Noting due to the same name as Benjamin's grandson Seth. In 1838 and 1839, Seth H. Pratt, Hume, NY, was one of the two representatives to the state assembly from Allegany County. He is buried in Rushford Cemetery. He lived from 1796 - 1846. His wife was Abigail Balcom (1796-1867). Seth H. Pratt was a doctor. The Beers History of Allegany County, p. 388, states that Dr. Seth H. Pratt was of English descent and born in Massachusetts in 1796. In 1845, the book continues, Pratt removed to Illinois, where he died a year later. His daughter married James P. Manchester of Hume. 2023: I am coming to believe that the only NY state connection for this family is through Richard Smalley Pratt's wife Mary Herrick, whose family were from New York State. But I will save this for now. |
Military Record | 3 July 1835 | On 3 July 1835 in Indiana Benjamin is noted in military records. This may be some other Benjamin Pratt, but a Benjamin Pratt is listed as a member of the Indiana State Militia, with rank of Ensign, in the 36th Regiment, in the Early Military Record Index. The Indiana Digital State Archives notes "The Early Military Records index is a compilation of records of the Indiana Territorial Militia and the Indiana State Militia. Also known as Indiana Rangers, Indiana Militia, and the Indiana Legion, the organization would finally become known as the Indiana National Guard. The index contains the names of early Hoosier soldiers who participated in the Battle of Tippecanoe, the War of 1812, and the Black Hawk War. Officers appointed to the Indiana State Militia during times of peace are also listed throughout the early part of the 19th century, and frequently mirror those found in the Mexican War and Civil War indexes. Two of the main sources of information were appointment books for commissioned officers, therefore, non-commissioned officers and privates are not well represented. |
Property Record | 31 October 1835 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 31 October 1835 in Carroll County, Indiana. Benjamin purchased property in Twp 24N, Range 1E, Section 28 on 31 Oct 1835.4,5 |
Property Record | 26 December 1835 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 26 December 1835 in Carroll County, Indiana. Benjamin purchased property in Twp 24N, Range 1E, Section 29 on 31 Oct 1835.4,5 |
Residence | 1836 | As of 1836 Benjamin lived in Union County, Indiana, based on an 1837 deed for property in Carroll County which listed him as "of Union County, Indiana". However, there was another Benjamin Pratt, the son of John Pratt Sr and Aravilla Bonar, who also lived in Indiana and came through Union and Fayette Counties, and could be confused with this Benjamin. |
Newspaper Mention | 24 November 1835 | The 24 November 1835 edition of the Huron Reflector, Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio, reported on a bill in chancery regarding heirs of Jacob Burdue, deceased. "It appearing to the court that Benjamin Pratt, Margaret Pratt, Jane Pratt, Benjamin Pratt, Jr., William Ritchie, Margaret Ritchie, and heirs unknown, Jacob Mingus and Rebecca Mingus, Heirs of the said Jacob Burdue, deceased, are not residents of this State...." I am saving this because of the mention of Benjamin Pratt in Ohio, and a vague similarity of the name Burdue to Purdy, which is a surname listed for Benjamin's wife in some internet trees, for which I have never seen any source. |
Property Record | 30 March 1837 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 30 March 1837 in Democrat Township, Carroll County, Indiana. when he purchased 120 acres in two parcels from the Crawfordsville Land Office. The certificates (#26921 and 25866) both say "Benjamin Pratt of Union County, Indiana." We can't be sure that this is the same Benjamin, but it may be, because a male of the correct age is in the Carroll County 1840 census. (It is possible that the Benjamin Pratt of Union County, Indiana was the son of John and Avarilla (Boner) Pratt from Fayette County, Pennsylvania who relocated to Mercer County, Illinois, because one of John's sons, Rezin, supposedly lived for some years in the 1820 in Union County.) However, the property is 20 miles south of Logansport, so this could not be the property that Richard Henry Pratt said he walked to. The two parcels are as follows: 1) Aliquot Parts NENE, Section 29, Township 24-N, Range 1-E, Meridian 2nd PM. 2) W 1/2 NW, 28, 24-N, 1-W, 2nd PM. This property is in northern Democrat Township, on or near the boundary line with Monroe Township. Nearby Purchasers: A Robert Pratt and a James Pratt purchased property in the same township in 1837 and 1838. Robert purchased two tracts in Sections 19 and 31, and James in Section 31. They both appear in the 1850 census for District 9, Carroll County, Indiana. District 9 seems to cover Democrat and Burlington townships. Robert is a 55 year old farmer born in Tenn, wife Catharine 55, b. in Penn, and two children born in Ohio, Lewis Hansbury, 14, and Catharine Hansbury, 11, perhaps children of Catharine by an earlier marriage. James is a 32 year old farmer born in Tenn, with a wife Lenda [Malinda Arther?] b. in Indiana, children Elizabeth, 9, Wm. H., 8, John W., 6, and George W, 3. Children all born in Indiana. In 1870 this James appears to by in Lawrence County, Missouri, with another wife, Mary Jane Imo, and 11 children. 6,7 |
Property Record | 11 December 1837 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 11 December 1837 in Carroll County, Indiana. Benjaman (sic throughout) Pratt & John Jackson DEED: This Indenture, made this 11th day of Decr, AD eighteen hundred and thirty seven between Benjaman Pratt and Mary Pratt of the County of Carroll in the State of Indiana of the first part, and John Jackson of Tippecanoe County and State afforesaid of the second part ___?_____ that the said party of the first, in consideration of the sum of Five Hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do hereby grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said party of the second part his Heirs and assigns forever, all that certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Carroll & State afforesaid to wit: The W. 1/2 of the Northern 1/4 of Section No. 28 in Township No 24 North of Range No 1 East containing 80 Acres more or less. And further, that they the said party of the first part, for themselves, their Heirs, Executors and Administrators, will warrant and forever defend the aforesaid premises with the appurtenances, and every part thereof, unto the said party of the second part, his Heirs and Assigns forever, against all lawful claims of any person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof, the said Benjaman Pratt and Mary Pratt have hereunto set their hands and seals on the day and year first above written. Benjamin Pratt, Mary Pratt signatures. Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of James Harman & William Twelly, State of Indiana and Carroll County, Before me, A. Clarke, a Justice of the Peace within and for said county, personally came Benjaman Pratt and Mary Pratt the grantors named in the above deed of conveyance, and acknowledge it to be their voluntary act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned. And the said Mary Pratt, the wife of the said Benjaman Pratt having been by me examined separate and apart from her said husband, as required by law, touching the above deed, and the full contents and purport thereof having been made known to by me, declared that she signed, sealed and delivered the same of her own voluntary free will and accord, and as her own act and deed, without any coercion or compulsion of her said husband, and that she thereby relinquished all her right and claim to dower in said premises. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Fourteenth day of December AD 1837. Adam Clark. Recorded March 2, 1839, James H. Stewart, R.C.C. NOTE: An interesting coincidence is that a John Jackson, from Tenn. is listed in the 1860 census in Mercer County, Illinois, next to John Pratt, son of John and Avarilla Pratt. The oldest son in this John Jackson's household in 1860, Wiley L, was born in Indiana. So that means in 1840, he was in Indiana. Coincidence?8 |
Census | 1840 | He appeared in the census 1840 in Carroll County, Indiana. Benjamin is listed as: Benjamin Pratt: one male 15-20, one male 60-70, one female 15-20, one female 20-30. Neighbors: Robert P. Bunning, O. D. Butler, Robert Weber, G. H. Duncan, William H. Burford, Samuel D. Gresham, Archibald Stitt. I was not able to find any of those men in the Carroll County 1860 census. Image 89/96 District 9 in 1840 appears to be Burlington, by comparing some names in the Burlington land purchase list and looking them up in 1860. Is this our Benjamin, or a different one? The age is right, and the location appears to be where the property was purchased. Is this female 20-30 the wife Mary mentioned in the 1837 property sale? Or a daughter or other relative? A wife aged 30 would not be old enough to have had Richard Smalley Pratt. We would expect his mother to be born about 1795 - 1800. And a wife 30 years old would not be old enough to have the two 15-20 teenagers on this census, unless she had twins at age 15. So perhaps Mary had died between 1837 and 1840. In 1840, there are 83 results to the search for a Benjamin Pratt on ancestry, but only 40 of them are named Benjamin. As before, the majority are in New England. Culpepper, VA (Also Thomas B.) Knox TN Lane, Logan, OH Perth Amboy, NJ Millwood, Guernsey, OH A Miss Mary Pratt was married on 19 Nov. 1848 to Joseph E. Smith. A Miss Elizabeth Pratt was married 5 Jul 1851 to Mr. Lewis H. Gerard. Both of these are announced in the Logansport Democratic Pharos paper, but the Pratt-Gerard marriage seems to have taken place in Burlington, Iowa (the county seat of Des Moines County). I am trying to find the announcement in a Burlington paper to clarify. Perhaps Elizabeth Pratt was from Logansport, which is why they reported it.9 |
Record not found | 1845 | Benjamin has not been found on the Tax List of 1845 for Democrat Township, Carroll County, Indiana. Benjamin Pratt is not found on the 1845 Tax List of Burlington Township, Carroll County. There are two Pratts: Robert Pratt, Section 31 James Pratt, Section 27 This tax list is one of the documents the Indiana on-site researcher checked. |
Biography | 1846 | In 1846: According to Mason Delano Pratt, Benjamin "must have been a farmer, for in 1846 he, with his son's family, migrated to Indiana. [Note,HK: this conflicts with the theory that these 1835-1837 land records are the same Benjamin Pratt.] He purchased a tract of canal lands in Marshall County near Lake Maxinkuckee. The deed issued to him by the State recites that he came from Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, but extensive search has so far failed to find any records of his living there..." I do not know what he meant by canal lands near Lake Maxinkuckee. It is well north of the Erie and Wabash Canal. It may have been near the planned Erie and Michigan Canal, but work was abandoned on that canal in 1839. I have not found this deed. Tami Pelling researched at Indiana State Library in 2009 for me. In reference to the 1946 Lake Maxinkuckee deed, she noted that the staff could not find the microfilm: Marshall County Tract Book, 1832-1875. However, she did view Marshall County General Index Deeds Book, Grantor 1, 1836-1853, and it lists Daniel, John and Amos Pratts.1 |
Newspaper | 29 November 1848 | According to the on 29 November 1848 edition of the in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, Democratic Pharos. "On the 19th of Nov., in Marshall county, by Esq. Carpenter, mr. JOSEPH E. SMITH and miss MARY PRATT. The above announcement will gratify the numerous acquaintances of friend Smith in this quarter. We wish him and his "better half" a happy honey-moon and a long one, at that." Perhaps this Mary Pratt was one of the young women in the 1840 census of Benjamin Pratt, because a Benjamin Pratt is found in their household in the 1850 census. |
Property Record | 1 June 1850 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 1 June 1850 in Howard County, Indiana. per search of La Porte/Winamac Land Office Entries database on the Indiana Commission of Public Records website, http://www.in.gov/icpr. Twp 24N Range 03E Section 9 E1/2, NE1/4 80 A. Twp 24N Range 03E Section 10 SW1/4 NW1/4 40 A. This property was in Howard County, which had been Cass County until 1844, and was about 20 miles south-southeast of Logansport, near Kokomo. See attachments. This property was warranted to Abraham Pratt under the ScripWarrant Act of 1847, and he was deceased at the time of issue so it was issued to his father and heir, Benjamin. This ScripWarrant Act was to grant land to soldiers in the Mexican-American War, and Abraham served in Company G, Seventh Regiment, United States Infantry. Was this Abraham the son of this Benjamin? See more information on Abraham on his own page. If Abraham was a son of Benjamin, and a brother of Richard Smalley Pratt, he may have been a reasonable age to enlist in 1846, and of a similar age to Richard Smalley Pratt. Supposedly, the Benjamin Pratt son of John and Aravilla Pratt never married (from his Findagrave entry https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/36921036/benjamin-pratt). "The "land office business" in Indiana began in 1801, when public lands in the southeastern corner of the Indiana Territory were put up for sale at Cincinnati. The U.S. Congress subsequently opened land offices at Vincennes in 1804; at Jeffersonville in 1807; in 1819 at Terre Haute (later Crawfordsville) and Brookville (later Indianapolis); and at Ft. Wayne in 1822. An additional land office opened at LaPorte in 1833; six years later, the office was moved to Winamac. The LaPorte- Winamac District embraced all or part of the present counties of Benton, Carroll, Cass, Elkhart, Fulton, Howard, Jasper, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Wabash, and White."6 |
In household | 24 September 1850 | He appeared in the household of Mary Herrick in the census 24 September 1850 in Eel Township, Cass County, Indiana. Mary is listed as as Mary, age 28, b. New York; with Henry, age 9, born in New York; Madison, age 7, born in New York; Seth, age 5, born in Pennsylvania, and Benjamin, age 79, born in Pennsylvania. (Logansport was the county seat of Cass County.)2 |
Residence | about 1851 | As of about 1851 Benjamin lived about 5 miles outside of town in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. Elaine Goodale Eastman, Richard Henry Pratt's biographer, tells of Benjamin's grandson Henry earning enough to buy a pair of boots at a young age, maybe 11 years old or so, and he "wore them proudly slung about his neck on a five mile tramp to his grandfather's, feeling that they had cost too much to be put upon his feet." That would have been some time around 1851 or so, and Benjamin at that time was living five miles out of Logansport. That may have been after his marriage to Mary Jane Hadden.10 |
Marriage | 27 March 1851 | He and Mary Jane Hadden were married on 27 March 1851 in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, |
Newspaper Item | 29 March 1851 | According to the 29 March 1851 edition of the Logansport Journal, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, , Married: On the 27th, Benjamin Pratt and Mrs. Mary Steele, both of this place. p.2, col. 6. |
Newspaper Item | 9 April 1851 | According to the 9 April 1851 edition of the Logansport Democratic Pharos, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, , Married, in this place, on the 27th, Mr. Benjamin Pratt and Mrs. Mary Steele. P.3, c.2. I see a Mary Steel in Eel Twp, Cass County in the 1850 census. No husband is listed, she is listed first, age 40 and has apparently 6 children ranging from age 23 - 7 Morris H (23), Leander (21), Count J.(16), Elisha (13), Olivia (10), Leonard (7) If our Benjamin married her, perhaps he wasn't as old as indicated by the 1850 census. However, the connection with Lake Maxinkuckee in Mary's son Count Steel's memoirs, supports the fact that this is the same Benjamin. In an Ancestry tree, I see this family, with a father Elisha Steel, who died 29 May 1848, in Logansport, IN. Mary's maiden name was Hadden, daughter of Smith Hadden who died 1857 in Oswego, NY. m. 31 Dec 1823 in Mentz, Cayuga Cty, NY. This tree says she married second James Pratt, b. 1805, but has no information on him. James was one of Benjamin's grandsons, an attorney who lived in Logansport until the early 1870's. Mary Jane Hadden Steel Pratt died, according to this tree, at Mishawaka, St. Joseph County, Indiana, 18 Apr 1860. I have tried to verify that, but was not able to find anything. |
Residence | about 1852 | As of about 1852 Benjamin lived at Lake Maxinkuckee in Union Township, Marshall County, Indiana, In Count S. Steel's biography, it says "In 1852 his mother married James Pratt and the family moved to the latter's farm in Marshall County, Ind. In August of that year, Count S. returned to Logansport..." Actually they married in 1851, in the spring, so it sounds as if they moved in the late spring or early summer to Marshall County. This cannot be the same property to which young Henry walked after school with his shoes slung over his shoulder, because that was 5 miles out of Logansport. Lake Maxinkuckee, in Union Township, Ind. is about 37 miles from Logansport. The website http://www.maxinkuckee.history.pasttracker.com/_union_township.htm states that "Union Township was organized in 1840. It was likely named after Union County, Indiana, the former home of some of the early settlers." This is interesting because one of Benjamin's Carroll County deeds lists him "of Union County." And Union County, Indiana, was the way point for the Fayette County, PA, Pratts, before they moved on further west. I am indebted to Jocelyn, ancestry user jocelyn_K_B, for her help with information related to Benjamin's life during his marriage to Mary Jane Hadden. |
Newspaper Advertisement | 24 August 1853 | The 24 August 1853 edition of the Terre Haute Wabash Express, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, contained the following advertisement: Notice by Court of Common Pleas looking for descendants of John Jackson, deceased, lists Benjamin Pratt among other names. Clipped because of the name and also because Benjamin Pratt sold property to a John Jackson in 1837. See attached. |
Newspaper Mention | 4 December 1856 | The 4 December 1856 edition of the Marshall County Democrat, Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, reported Delinquent Tax List for the year 1855. Benjamin Pratt is listed in Union Township, the west half of the sw quarter of Section 36, 80 acres. See attached. West of present-day Peach Rd, and North of Rt. 110 This is the property that Mason D. Pratt mentions in his genealogy of the Pratt family. He says the deed says Benjamin is from Philadelphia County, PA. I am working on locating that deed. This is the property that Benjamin sold to William Sturgeon in 1864, long-distance from Maryland. |
Research Note | 1857 | 1857 Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. I reviewed the Marshall County Democrat from Mar 1, 1858 through the end of March 1858, reading the probate notices, Sheriff sales, estate sales, and legal notices, and did not see any mention of Benjamin Pratt. In the end of Feb, and through March, a notice was posted of a complaint by Samuel F. Pratt, Paschal P. Pratt, and Edward P. Beals, against Henry B. Hine, who "has left the State of Indiana with intent to defraud his creditors." I have not yet researched who these Pratts may be. I see a Samuel F. Pratt and Co. mentioned in other notices. I don't believe them to be connected at this time. |
Anecdote | about 1858 | About 1858: In the biography of Count S. Steel (the son of Benjamin's wife Mary (Hadden) Steel) it says "He (Count) remained in Peoria until the spring of 1857 and then returned to Marshall county, Indiana. He worked in a carriage factory there for a year and then moved his mother and sisters to Mishawaka, Ind." If he moved his mother and sisters to Mishawaka, perhaps in early 1858, where was Pratt? It sounds as if they split up, because Benjamin was evidently alive in 1864 when he sold the property. Cemeteries in Union Township were: Bucklew / McDonald Burr Oak Cromley Culver Masonic / Old Union Township Maxinkuckee IOOF / Poplar Grove Washington /Lawson Zion No record of his death found in Union Township. |
Census | 12 July 1860 | A Benjamin Pratt appeared in the census 12 July 1860 in Denton, Caroline County, Maryland. Benjamin is listed as: living in the household of Benjamin Pratt, age 51, Farmer, born in Ohio. This is a Benjamin Pratt, but only a slight possibility to be our Benjamin, but I list it just in case. Caroline County is on the Eastern Shore, next to Queen Anne's County. Benjamin, age 51 is listed with his second wife, Elizabeth, and numerous children ranging from under one year to age 15, including a son Benjamin, and Benjamin, age 84, born in "ditto" from Maryland written several children above. The older children were born in Pennsylvania, and in fact I see their 1850 census, with his first wife, in Philadelphia. I list this because Mason Delano Pratt thought that Benjamin Pratt came from Philadelphia. If our Benjamin had been 79 in 1850, he would have been 89 here, but either age could be wrong. This Benjamin Pratt, 51, is buried in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Gloucester County, VA |
Newspaper Mention | 8 August 1863 | The 8 August 1863 edition of the Logansport Journal, Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, reported List of Letters remaining in the Post Office for pickup as of 8 Aug 1863. Benjamin Pratt is listed there. |
Property Record | 12 April 1864 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 12 April 1864 in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland. This is the deed mentioned by Mason D. Pratt In his genealogy book, "Sometime during the War, he moved to Queen Anne's County, Maryland, for a deed for the farm, given to William Sturgeon in 1864, was signed by him and his wife." This deed was registered in Easton, Talbot County, Maryland, and sent to Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana for entry into the Marshall County Deed Book. This is the sale of the W1/2 of SW1/4 of Section 36, Township 32, Range 1E. It is sold to William Sturgeon of Fulton County, Indiana. See Attached,11 |
Property Record | 31 January 1865 | Benjamin was involved in a property transaction on 31 January 1865 in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana. selling his property in Union Township. The sale was recorded in the Marshall County Deed Book S, p. 254, on 31 Jan 1865.11 |
