Obituary1 March 19291 March 1929, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Mrs. Mary Francis Smith, wife of Mr. Millard F. Smith of Middletown, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning at her home on Paradise avenue, death being the result of heart trouble. Mrs. Smith has been suffering from heart trouble for some time, having a severe attack in the fall, but recently she seemed to be in good health, having attended church two Sundays previous to her death.

The deceased was the daughter of Jacob and Harriet Ward, having been born May 6, 1854, on Paradise avenue, where she lived her entire life. She attended the schools of the town and in December, 1874, married Millard F. Smith, by whom she is survived.

She is also survived by a son, Mr. Robert W. Smith of Newport, who because of illness was unable to be at his mother's bedside, and also by two daughters, Mrs. Walter S. Barker and Mrs. William Whitman, both of Middletown. Five grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Smith was taken very ill at 1:30 Sunday morning. The doctor was summoned, but nothing could be done except to relieve the suffering. Her daughters were also called and were with their mother when she died one hour later.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Middletown Methodist Episcopal Church for 62 years, having also been a member of the Ladies Aid and the missionary societies of that church.
