Obituary31 May 193531 May 1935, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Alvin Peckham Smith of Middletown died Monday evening after an illness of a few months. The deceased was born in Middletown, February 4, 1964, the son of the late Henry and Sarah Peckham Smith. He married Emma Louise Peckham of Lebanon, Conn., by whom he is survived. He is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Julian F. Peckham of Middletown, Mrs. William D. McCaughy of Providence, Mrs. Robert E. Grinnell of Newport; a son William H. Smith of Middletown; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, two sisters, Mrs. Stephen P. [sic] Congdon and Mrs. George H. Irish, both of Middletown. The deceased was a farmer, having lived since his marriage on Valley road.

The funeral of Alvin P. Smith was conducted at his home on Valley road, Middletown, Wednesday by the Rev. Robert L. Roberts, pastor of the Middletown Methodist Episcopal Church. Many floral tributes were sent by relatives and friends. Interment was in the Four Corners cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Peckham Smith Congdon, 94, a former Middletown teacher, the oldest member of the Middletown Methodist Church, and widow of Stephen B. Congdon, died this morning at the home of Mrs. William Douglas, 39 Roseneath Avenue. She had lived there for several years.

Mrs. Congdon was born in Middletown, daughter of Henry and Sarah Smith. She was a graduate of the Rhode Island Normal School and taught in Middletown before her marriage. She was for many years one of the most active members of the church, its Women's Society of Christian Service and Mission Study Circle, also of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

She was an aunt of Mrs. Robert E. Grinnell of Newport, Harold S. Irish, Mrs. Julian F. Peckham and William H. Smith of Middletown, and Mrs. William D. McCaughey of Providence. She also leaves nine grandnieces and nephews and 11 great grandnieces.

Services will be held in the Hambly Funeral Home at 2 pm Monday.

Isaac Thomas Smith, an old resident of Middletown, died Friday afternoon at his home on Third Beach road. He was born 75 years ago in Middletown, a son of Isaac and Mary A. Smith, and had been a resident of that town during his entire life, being engaged in farming. He was unmarried and is survived by two sisters, Miss Fannie Smith of Middletown and Mrs. Esther A. Gifford of this city.

Rev. Fred W. Knickrehm, pastor of St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated Monday afternoon at the funeral of Isaac Thomas Smith, at Ednebach's Funeral Parlors. Interment was in the Four Corners cemetery, Middletown, the bearers being Chester Brown, Fillmore Coggeshall, Prescott Malden [sic], George Peabody, Frank Peckham and Restcom Peabody.
