Charles P. Smith, Jr., 68, of 37 Marsh St., a taxi driver, was found dead in bed yesterday morning. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Mr. Smith was born in Middletown Oct 11, 1897, a son of Charles P. and Mary Delaney Smith. He had worked for several local taxi operators. Years ago he was a teamster. He operating a refreshment concession at Third Beach in the early 1930's.

Mr. Smith leaves three sons, Frank E. Smith of this city, Chief Warrant Officer Henry Smith, USN, now in Italy, and Charles Herman Smith of Seattle, Wash.; four daughters, Mrs. Fred Silvia of Saugus, Mass., Mrs. William Linders and Mrs. Raymond Wetrick of Seattle and Mrs. Alphonse Spenick of Ocalla, Fla., four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Hersch and Mrs. Ralph Smith of Middletown, Mrs. Royal Booth of Worcester, Mass., and Mrs. Howard M. White of this city; 26 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles.

A service will be held in the O'Neill Funeral Home romorrow at 11 am. The Rev. Carl W. Saunders, pastor of the Middletown Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Middletown Four Corners Cemetery.

beloved husband of Yvonne of Middletown, RI died at Newport Hospital on Sunday, December 14, 2008. Born in Newport, RI on June 19, 1918, he was a WWII US Navy veteran serving in the Pacific.

He is a member of St. Alban's Masonic Lodge, Nestell Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, the Lodge of Odd Fellows in Bristol, RI, the Scottish Rite, Hope Royal Arch Chapter and the Knights Templar. He was a member of the Newport Knights of Columbus. He was past president of the machinist union at the Naval Torpedo Station.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son Frank E. Smith, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Newport, RI and three grandchildren. Stepsons Jerry and Gary Warnick, step daughter-in-law Kelly Warnick, eight step grandsons, two step granddaughters and four step great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his beloved first wife Mary of over 54 years and his daughter Judith Ann Cremek.

A memorial service will be held in April 2009.

In remembrance of Frank, donations may be made to Newport Hospital Nurses Emergency Fund, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840.

Was Born in 1857 and Attended Berkeley Memorial Church Nearly 50 Years

Mrs. Hannah Mary (Smith) Peabody, wife of the late John Foster Peabody, died Sunday after a five weeks' illness at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Nathan Smith, on Third Beach road, Middletown.

She was born in the old Smith homestead, in Middletown, July 29, 1857, daughter of the later George W. Smith and Oral Amanda Shenway Smith. In 1878, she married John F. Peabody.

Mrs. Peabody was a parishioner of Berkeley Memorial Church for nearly 50 years and was an active worker in its guild as long as her advancing years permitted.

Surviving are two sons, Restcom E. Peabody and John Foster Peabody of Middletown, and a daughter, Mrs. C. Woodman Chase of Portsmouth; a brother, Charles P. Smith of Middletown; six grandchildren: Mary Betty Peabody, Restcom Peabody, Jr., Nancy Ann Peabody and Foster Peabody, Jr., of Middletown; Constant Chase of the Canal Zone and Foster Chase of Portsmouth; and one great granddaughter, Oral Chase of the Canal Zone.

Funeral services were conducted at her home on Third Beach road Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. Roy W. Magoun of the Seamen's Church Institute, who is supplying at St. Columba's Berkeley Memorial Chapel of which the deceased was a member, officiated. Relatives and friends attended and there were many floral tributes. Interment was in the family plot in the Middletown cemetery. The bearers were Daniel A. Peckham, Soren Morgenson and Warren Sisson of Middletown and C. Woodman Chase of Portsmouth.

ORREL AMANDA SMITH, 93, of 426 Third Beach Rd., a telephone operator for New England Telephone in the Newport office for 20 years, retiring in 1970, died Monday at home. She was the wife of the late Ralph Caswell Smith.

Born in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Charles P. and Mammie (Delaney) Smith.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Columba Berkley Memorial Chapel and its Women's Guild. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and of the Aquidneck Chapter 7 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She leaves two sons, Ralph C. Smith Jr. of Statsburg, N.Y., and David S. Smith of Middletown; one daughter, Donna Walsh of Middletown; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Catherine Hersh.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Ave. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery.
