Miss Mary Emma Irish, 79, who lived at the Home for the Aged on Washington Street, died yesterday.

She was born in Middletown, a daughter of William J. and Rebecca Smith Irish. Surviving are two nephews, Harold F. Irish of Middletown and Raymond E. Irish of Newington, Conn. Miss Irish was a member of the Middletown Methodist Church.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Hambly Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Middletown Cemetery.

[In the 3 Jun 1954 issue, the paper reported:]
Services for Miss Mary Emma Irish, who lived at the Home for the Aged on Washington Street, were held at the Hambly Funeral Home this afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Robert L. Roberts, former pastor of the Middletown Methodist Church, officiated.

Interment was in the Middletown Cemetery. Bearers were Roy Peckham, Harold Irish, Reinier Bulk, and Frank E. Olson.

The Rev. William J. Smith, who has been a member of the New England Southern Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is known to many members of St. Paul's Church in this city, observed his ninety-fifth birthday anniversary November 3.

Mr. Smith is the oldest living alumnus of East Greenwich Academy where he was graduated in 1865 and also is the oldest living graduate of Wesleyan University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1870 and his Master of Arts degree in 1873.

He has been a member of the New England Southern Conference since 1874 and has served as pastor of 11 different churches in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, being retired 15 years ago.

He was born in Middletown in 1842 and now lives at 909 Roosevelt avenue, Pawtucket.

Obituary12 January 192412 January 1924, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, Newport Mercury Obituary:. Mr. Frederick A. Smith of Green End avenue died on Sunday at his home, after an illness of pneumonia, which followed a shock some time ago.

Mr. Smith was born in Middletown in July, 1840, the son of James M. and Sarah (Coggeshall) Smith, and married Miss Maria N. Barker. To them were born three children, one of whom died in infancy. He is survived by a son, Robert A. Smith of Attleboro, Mass., a daughter, Mrs. Maria Thorpe of Providence and three grandchildren. His wife died in 1881, and in 1887, he married Miss Elizabeth A. Brown, who survives him, as do two brothers, Rev. William L. Smith of Pawtucket and David Smith of this town. Mr. Smith was a farmer and resided on Riverside avenue until a few years ago, when he purchased the old Congdon estate on Green End avenue. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, from which the funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. They were conducted by the pastor, Rev. John F. Pearce and the interment was in the Middletown Cemetery. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful.

Although never of very robust health, she had no especial ailment and her sudden death after a few hours illness came as a great shock to all who knew her.

Mrs. Ward was the daughter of James M. and Sarah A. Smith, and was born in Middletown. She was married May 1st, 1865, to the late Gilbert L. Ward, and is survived by one daughter, Miss Sarah M. Ward, who has always lived at home. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Annie E. Ward, who has resided with her for a number of years, and three brothers, Mr. David C. Smith and Mr. Frederick A. Smith of Middletown, and the Rev. Wm. J. Smith of Warehouse Point, Conn.

Member of Middletown Methodist Church Lived with Daughter on Eustis Avenue.

Mrs. Emma Smith, of 6 Eustis avenue, wife of the late Alvin P. Smith of Middletown, died at the newport Hospital Wednesday after a brief illness incident to her advanced age. Mrs. Smith, twin sister of Mrs. Mary W. Lawton of this city, would have been 81 years old next July 4. As far as is known they were among the oldest twins in the country.

Mrs. Smith was born in Lebanon, Conn., daughter of the late Emily Burdick and William Wyatt Peckham of Middletown. She was twice married. Her husband, Alvin P. Smith, died 13 years ago. She was a member of the Middletown Methodist Church.

Besides her sister, she leaves two sons, Walter G. Taylor of Wallingford, Conn., and William H. Smith of Middletown, three daughters, Mrs. Florence Peckham of Middletown, Mrs. Mary McCaughey of Providence and Mrs. Cora Grinnell of Eustis avenue, with whom she made her home, severn grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Mrs. Peckham was a member of the Middletown Methodist Church and of its Women's Society for Christian Service. She also was a member of the Middletown Rotary - Anne's and Aquidneck Grange.

Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Mrs. Edna L. Lyons, Mrs. Helen P. Tolderlund, and Mrs. Martha P. Sherman, two sons, Edward J. Peckham and Julian F. Peckham Jr., all of Middletown, two sisters, Mrs. Cora Grinnell of Newport and Mrs. Mary McCaughey of Providence, a brother, William Smith of Middletown, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association.

She leaves a son, William D.McCaughey Jr. of Warwick; a sister, Cora T. Grinnell of Middletown; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. atn the Washington park United Methodist Church, Broad Street. Cremation was at Swan Point Crematorium, Providence.

Mr. Peckham was one of the oldest members of the Aquidneck Grange and a past noble grand and a member of the Oakland Lodge of Odd Fellows. He was a member of Aquidneck Encampment of Odd Fellows and St. Paul's Lodge of Masons. He was brevet colonel of the Newport Artillery Company and an origianl member of the Middletown Fire Department.

He was a former chairman of the Middletown School Committee.

Mr. Peckham was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Middletown Rotary Club and a life member of the Newport Rifle Club.

He was born in Middletown, Feb. 29 1888, son of Edward J. and Caroline Carr Peckham. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Florence Smith Peckham.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Edna P. Lyon, Mrs. Helen P. Tolderlund and Mrs. Martha P. Sherman, two sons, Edward J. Peckham and Julian F. Peckham Jr., a brother, Laurence S. Peckham, all of Middletown, and 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert Elisha Grinnell, 88, of 8 Eustis Ave., a retired city Public Works Department employee and former farmer, died last night at Newport Hospital.

He was born in Middletown, a son of Robert J. and Clara Peckham Grinnell. He operated his own farm in Middletown for 40 years before he joined the Newport Public Works Department, where he was employed for 25 years.

Mr. Grinnell was a member of the Middletown Methodist Church and Aquidneck Grange. He attended the University of Rhode Island.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cora Smith Grinnell; three sons, Robert E. Grinnell Jr. of North Dartmouth, Mass., John Grinnell of Los Alamos, N.M. and Francis Grinnell of California; three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Ellis of Acushnet, Mass., Mrs. Vera Noakes of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Ethel Simmons of Newport; three brothers, Clairmont L. Grinnell of this city, Percival Grinnell of Providence, and C. Leroy Grinnell of Portsmouth; 16 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

A service will be held in the Hambly Funeral Home tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Rev. Carl W. Saunders, pastor of the Middletown Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery.

Spooner of 354 East Main Road, Middletown, became the bride of William Henry Smith Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith of 306 Valley Road, Middletown in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth this morning. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by her sister Miss Edith T. Spooner, as maid of honor, Edward Johnson was best man, and Arthur M. Doing [?] Jr. and Richard S. Spooner Jr., brother of the bride, were ushers.

The bride wore a gown of champagne lace over taffeta, with a circular veil over a headpiece of champagne satin and pearls. She carried a white orchid on a prayer book.

A reception was held at Holy Cross guild house on West Main Road, Middletown. After a wedding trip to New York City, the couple will live on Winthrop Drive, Valley Brook Farm, Middletown.

The bride is a graduate of Rogers High School and the New England Deaconness Hospital School of Nursing in Boston. Mr. Smith, also a Rogers graduate, is a graduate of Cornell University. He is a contractor.

Kirby, 27, of 605 Paradise Ave., and William H. Smith, Jr., 28, of Valley Road. "The appointment of Kirby and Smith has been recommended by the Middletown Republican Town Committee." After a brief bio on Kirby, the paper wrote, "Smith is likewise a Rogers [High School] graduate and received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1953. He is affiliated with the Seaboard Realty Corp., which is building and operating a housing development on the Smith farm land off Valley Road. He has been active in the Chamber of Commerce.
