Research Note | R. Hammett Tilley lists two lines of Tilley's descending from John, one in Granby, Mass, and one in New Brunswick, Canada. He does not explain why he believes these lines are connected, and Newport Historical Society was not able to find any documentation that supports the connection. RHT left letters there which he received from descendants in those two lines, but none of the letters connect the lines back to John, or back to Ideford, Devonshire. As to the Granby, Massachusetts line, Cynthia Farr Brown has researched and documented this family, and believes that it has a Hilliard background, and changed the surname around 1790. The immigrant of this Hilliard line, Hugh Hilliard, also went by Tilley in some records. I (HK) question whether or not John came to America, even though R. Hammett Tilley seems to have done a great deal of work on this line. | |
Birth | 20 December 1694 | John Tilley was born on 20 December 1694 in Ideford, Devonshire, England.1 |
Baptism | 6 January 1694/95 | He was baptized on 6 January 1694/95 in Ideford, Devonshire, England. "Son of John Tilley"2 |
Immigration | about 1710 | He immigrated about 1710 to Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, The opinion that John Tilley was one of the brothers who immigrated from Devon to Boston is based on the genealogy booklet of R. Hammett Tilley. However, John is not mentioned in William the Ropemakers will of 1717. William the Ropemaker only mentions William (who relocated to Newport) and James (who relocated to New London). And there is a marriage listed in the Ideford Parish Register, at the date when John would have been about 26. |

DNA Clues | 2021 | David Brown Tilley, Jr. took a Y-DNA test at Family Tree DNA, and has two Y matches, Will Tilley and Wayne Paul Tilley, both of whom descend from this George Tilley, through his grandson John Merritt Tilley. This confirms the connection of our Tilley line (from the brother William Tilley) to William's brother George, and gives genetic confirmation of the connection to the Tilleys of Ideford, Devon. |

James pledged 10 pounds. Frances Caulkins notes in her History of New London, "Most of these subscribers, but not all, were residents in New London.
