Biography

Birth30 December 1816Isaac Moser was born on 30 December 1816 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. In the church register listing his death, Isaac's birth is given as 1 Jan 1816. I am using the date given in the First Reformed Church register for his birth.1,2
Baptism7 April 1817He was baptized on 7 April 1817 at First Reformed Church, 3rd and Church Streets, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. His sponsors were Samuel and Elisabeth Nickum. His twin brother Jacob was baptised at the same time.2
Marriage4 October 1840He and Ellen Weaver were married on 4 October 1840 at First Reformed Church, 3rd and Church Streets, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, It is recorded in the church register under "Marriages, 1840: Isaac Moser and Ellen Weber"3,4
LostSon28 June 1850He suffered the loss of his son Jeremiah who died at age 3 on 28 June 1850 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. of convulsions5
Census3 August 1850Isaac Moser appeared in the census 3 August 1850 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Isaac is listed as: Isaac Moser (age 32, Butcher, personal estate $1100)
Jesse (age 29, also a butcher)
Ellen (age 32)
Wilson (age 6)
Richard (age 3 months)
Elizabeth Weaver (age 55, Cannot read and write)

Jesse was Isaac's brother. He is almost the same age as Josiah and I think the two may be conflated at times.

They live next door to Josiah Moser, age 30, also a butcher, and Sarah, age 25, with children Elizabeth, 8, Charles, 6, Catharine, 3 and Isaac, 1 month.6
LostDaughter19 August 1858He suffered the loss of his daughter Ida Elizabeth who died at age 1 on 19 August 1858 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. of teething and convulsions.7
Census9 June 1860He appeared in the census 9 June 1860 at Lehigh Ward in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Isaac is listed as: age 44, Tailor, $2000 personal estate and $4000 real estate. With Ellen, age 44, Wilson age 15, Richard age 10, Howard, age 5 and Forest, age 1.8
Death14 April 1865He died on 14 April 1865 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, An Isaac Moser died on this date. The church in which it was recorded is the church where our Isaac's children were baptized. And our Isaac does not appear in the 1870 census, and his children are dispersed among various other families. So I conjecture that this is our Isaac, even though the register lists his birth date as 1 Jan 1816, and his father as Henry. Check to see if there was a marriage between Henry Moser and a Catherine, and if they had an Isaac.9
Burial18 April 1865He was buried on 18 April 1865 at Hays Cemetery, South Side, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The church register states "son of Henry and Catharine, born 1 Jan 1816, died 14 Apr 1865, aged 49 yrs, 3 mo., 14 das. of consumption, buried Hay's graveyard."

Andreas is anglicized Andrew. So this is probably a different person, also the birth date is a year different.1

Biography

Birth19 March 1845Wilson Moser was born on 19 March 1845 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.1,2
Baptism25 December 1846He was baptized on 25 December 1846 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry Street, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. with Andrew Moser acting as Sponsor. Another child of the seven baptized on this date was Lenah Weaver, dauther of Joseph Lynn and Mary Weaver, sponsored by Elizabeth Weaver. This suggests that Joseph may have been her son and a brother of Ellen.2
LostFather14 April 1865On 14 April 1865 Wilson Moser suffered the loss of his father Isaac who died at age 48 . An Isaac Moser died on this date. Check to see if there was a marriage between Henry Moser and a Catherine, and if they had an Isaac.3
LostMother5 July 1867On 5 July 1867 Wilson Moser suffered the loss of his mother Ellen who died at age 47 . Listed as "Ellen Moser, nee Weber, born 27 Nov 1819, died 5 Jul 1867." This is listed in the Zion Lutheran Church records, which is not the church she attended at least through 1864 when the last baptism of one of her children is found there. It was a downtown church which merged into St. John's ELC in 1962. This is likely to be the same Ellen. Weber is the German word for Weaver, and Zion is referred to as the German-speaking church on the St. John's website.4,5
Deathbefore 1870He died before 1870 I don't see this Wilson in any census after 1860. I think the Wilson who was electrocuted was one of the next generation. An ancestry tree lists this Wilson as imprisoned and died at Andersonville, 16 Oct 1864, Sumter, Georgia. He is listed as Company H, 16th PA Cavalry Regiment. It's a little odd because this was not a Northampton Cty or local regiment. Northampton County is not listed. So I would like to see an additional confirmation that this is the same Wilson, although since he does not appear in the 1870 census, that fits with this fact.

Biography

Research NoteThree Forrest Moser's. There is a Forest D. Moser, around the same time frame. Forrest D. Moser has a will in Will Book 16, 1905-07, p. 18, leaving everything to his wife Margaret, better known as Maggie, and desiring to be buried in Hay's Cemetery. It was signed and proved May 8, 1905.

This is probably the Forrest who married Maggie Cronin in Hunterdon County in March of 1891.

This Forest D. Moser has two obituary listings in the 1905 Marx Room index, 4/20/1905 p. 5, and 4/24/1905, p. 8. (Spelled Forrest in that index.)

This Forrest D. was born in May 1860, per the 1900 census, a butcher, at 804 Walnut St., married 10 years, and they have no children. Maggie immigrated from Ireland in 1869. In the 1900 city directory he was at 804 Walnut St., butcher.

There is another Forrest Moser listed in the 1900 directory, a teamster at 732 Main St., South Side. No wife or children are indicated. Mrs. Lydia Moser, widow is at the same address. This is probably her son, Forrest Sassaman Moser who was killed in a train accident in Jutland, NJ, 12 Jan 19165.
Birth19 May 1859Forrest Isaac Moser was born on 19 May 1859 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.1,2
Baptism8 November 1859He was baptized on 8 November 1859 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 330 Ferry Street, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. with "grandmother Elizabeth Weaver" as Sponsor.2
LostFather14 April 1865On 14 April 1865 Forrest Isaac Moser suffered the loss of his father Isaac who died at age 48 . An Isaac Moser died on this date. The church in which it was recorded is the church where our Isaac's children were baptized. And our Isaac does not appear in the 1870 census, and his children are dispersed among various other families. Check to see if there was a marriage between Henry Moser and a Catherine, and if they had an Isaac.3
LostMother5 July 1867On 5 July 1867 Forrest Isaac Moser suffered the loss of his mother Ellen who died at age 47 .
Census9 July 1870He appeared in the census 9 July 1870 at House of Refuge in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Forrest is listed as: age 11 or 12 (there are two enumerations), "work and school." This may or may not be our Forrest, but I haven't found him in Easton, and both his parents died within the past 5 years. An 1875 NY Times article said that the House of Refuge had been in operations 47 years, and had housed nearly 12,000 girls and boys during that time. "Several thousand dollars were earned by the labor of the inmates, of whom there are habitually five or six hundred. It is an institution not intended for persons nearly arrived at their majority, nor for those familiar with lives of crime...One of the rules is that when the inmate, on admission, is under the age of twelve, he will be retained one year, if at the end of that time he is fitted to be placed out. When over twelve years and under fourteen, he will be retained sixteen months; when over fourteen years and under sixteen, he will be retained twenty months, and when over sixteen years of age he will be retained two years." (24 Jan 1875, p.) Other references to the House of Refuge refer to juvenile delinquents, and providing an alternative to prison for juvenile offenders. This institution was opened about 1828, modeled after a House of Refuge that had been opened in New York 4 years earlier. The Act of Assembly that established the institution declared that the managers should, "at their discretion, receive into the said House of Refuge, such children who shall be taken up or committed as vagrants, or upon any criminal charge, or duly convicted of criminal offences, as may be in the judgement of the Court of Oyer and Terminer, or of the Court of Quarter Sessions of the peace of the county, or of the Mayor’s Court of the city of Philadelphia, or of any alderman or justice of the peace, or of the managers of the almshouse and house of employment, be deemed proper objects.”6
Census1880He appeared in the census 1880 at Eastern District in Bethlehem Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Forrest is listed as: Mosser, Forrest (age 21, Servant, Single, Farm Laborer, born in Penna and parents also)

He is in the household of Owen Odenwelder (34, Farmer)
and his wife Alavista (age 33)
and their children Sarah (11),
Clara E. (9),
Cornelia (4),
and Mary A (1)
Annie S. Rice (age 18, Servant, Single) is also in the household.
Census1890He appeared in the census 1890 at 1217 Spruce Street in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Forrest is listed as: living in the household of Buttner John F, railroader--Mary E, Sallie C, Frank B, Edgar M, Lillie L, Bertha E. This is the census directory created by Joseph H. Werner in 1891 before the original burned. It is alphabetical, and to find who was in a given household you have to search the text for the address.

Mary Elizabeth Moser Buttner was the daughter of Sarah and Jesse Moser (son of Andreas and Catharine Moser)7
Deathbefore 1915He died before 1915 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania,8

Schmidt, Lewis G. A Civil War History of the 47th Regiment of Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, Allentown, 1986. Also Civil War journal, 1863-65, of William Henry Eagle, Harrisburg, surgeon, 47th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia, in Manuscript Group 6 at the PA State Archives. (Covers 14 Jul 1863 - 15 Jul 1865)
Birth27 September 1845Henry Dwight Flint was born on 27 September 1845.1
Military13 February 1865He served in the military on 13 February 1865 in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, as a private in the Civil War. His Civil War Veterans' Record Card in the Pennsylvania State Archives says: Age at enrollment - 19, Complexion - Dark, Height - 5' 4 1/2", Eyes - Gray, Hiar - Dark. Occupation - Laborer, Residence Wyoming County.

The regiment had been organized in 1861 and at the end of 1864 was at Camp Russell, near Winchester, Virginia, until December 20, 1864, and at Camp Fairview, Charlestown, and on outpost duty in West Virginia until April, 1865. They moved to Washington. D.C., April 19-21, 1865 with a Grand Review May 23-24. The regiment moved to Savannah, Ga., May 31-June 4, and to Charleston, S.C., June 17.They had duty at Charleston and other points in South Carolina until December. Mustered out December 25, 1865. (http://www.civilwararchive.com/Unreghst/unpainf2.htm#47th)2
Military25 December 1865He served in the military on 25 December 1865 The dates are confusing. The 1890 Veterans' Schedules shows his discharge date as 10 June 1886, but shows 10 months and 28 days of service, and the Regiment mustered out in Dec 1865, which would be about 10 months. It is also odd that Bates, Samuel P. History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865 , Harrisburg, 1868-1871, available online at the Making of America University of Michigan website, shows Company H recruited at Newberry, Perry County.2
